CHICAGO—Clearwire was the big winner in last night’s Best of 4G World awards, taking home two of the total five awards presented during the convention.

The awards are intended to honor companies that have excelled in development for and deployment of next-generation networks.

Judged by a panel that consisted mainly of Yankee Group analysts, the awards are open to all, whether or not they are a part of the 4G World conference. Eliot Weinman, conference founder and co-chair and president of the events division of Yankee Group, was present to hand out the awards.

“The innovation and effort that have been demonstrated by all finalists and nominees reflect the leadership that continues to drive opportunity and benefits throughout the emerging 4G industry,” Weinman said

Best 4G enabling technology innovation award went to Dragonwave for its Horizon Packet Microwave Solution. Best WiMAX Deployment went to Clearwire for Clear 4G Service.

Bridgewater Systems took home the Best Mobile Internet Application for its myPolicy Solution. Samsung took Best Mobile Internet Device for the Samsung Mondi. And Clearwire made a second trip to the podium for Best Backhaul Deployment.

4G World kicked off on Tuesday and ends tomorrow. Yankee Group’s official tallies report more than 7,000 pre-registered attendees and 117 exhibitors.

The conference formerly known as WiMAX World and has since changed its name to 4G World in an effort to include more technologies in the 4G ecosystem.

Apr 10, 2009 — Clear Internet rolling out to more cities in 2009 and 2010
Good news about the price of your Internet connection. The marketplace is about to get busted up by a third competitor!

Much of America has suffered under the shared duopoly of the local phone companies offering DSL and the cable giants offering cable modem service. But those who live in distant suburbs or rural areas may only have access to one or even none of those choices.

This is the year that things are about to change.

Clear (aka WiMAX) — a new technology that sends out a blanket high-speed Internet signal to cover an entire metro area — is set to roll out in a number of new American cities. Baltimore had been the first city to have it on a trial basis. Atlanta, Las Vegas and Portland are the latest cities to get coverage.

Coming later in 2009, Clear will be extended to Chicago, Charlotte, Dallas, Philadelphia and Seattle, among other cities. That accounts for about one-third of the nation’s population.

By 2010, Boston, Houston, New York, San Francisco and Washington D.C. will also be rolled out.

With Clear, you can have either floating or fixed wireless Internet. The former allows you to access the Internet when traveling at speeds of about 70 miles per hour — hopefully as a passenger rather than as a driver!

Clark has a first-generation version of Clear (then called “Clearwire”) at his beach home. He pays about $24/month and has been impressed by its reliability over the course of 3 years. But keep in mind that prices will likely fluctuate as Clear rolls out to more markets. The entry of a third player is always a game-changer in a capitalist system.

One word of caution: Be wary of your current Internet service provider trying to lock you into a long-term contract ahead of Clear’s arrival in your market. With everything that’s coming down the pike in 2009 and beyond, you definitely don’t want to be locked in!

1. Describe your business in 3 sentences or less.
LeatherSmiths is a leather care, repair, and restoration company.  We use Green products from Italy to maintain and restore beautiful leather pieces from high end purses to antique furniture.

2. What is your contact information (email, phone number, web, twitter, blog,..)?
 Roger Pisaneschi

 blog: http://leathersmiths.blogspot.com
 twitter: Atlpaisan

3. What business challenges CLEAR solved for you?
Clear has helped me solve many logistical issues.  I am very rarely in my office, yet I am responsible for reviewing legal docs, managing corporate sales, and overseeing operations. I do have a Blackberry, however it does not work well for looking at long documents or sending long emails.  With CLEAR, I can go almost anywhere in Atlanta and use my laptop.  This is a huge benefit for me, before CLEAR, I had to find hotspots, and try to conduct business in busy, loud coffee shops.

4. What is your favorite place to use CLEAR?
 Chick Fil A

5. What would you say to a friend who is interested in CLEAR?
I would tell them that if they find themselves doing a fair amount of work out of the office, and in Atlanta, then CLEAR is hard to beat.  I would let them know how Clear has clearly opened capacity in my life, and suggest that they Talk to Jake at Go Technology!
